The design of the CD shows two hands, one light skin and one darker skin embracing each other. This shows me that they see a world of racial harmony and that people no matter of race or gender should be as one. The title of the album "Science and faith" leads me to believe the band may have a strong spiritual side to them, meaning that with all today’s technology moving forward so fast, you still need faith and belief in things we may not understand completely, to make everything else in the world seem worthwhile.

The script

The script released their new album science and faith which went straight in at number 1 in the UK charts selling 70,816 copies in the first week, which is a fantastic return for a band that have only released one previous album prior to the release of "science and faith".

Marketing competition

There was a clever marketing tool that the band decided to use which was to set up a competition for the fans to win tickets to attend a private London based gig, 375 tickets would be given away to the fans who promoted the new album (Science and faith) by spreading the word in the streets and just taking pictures on how they did it, and posting it back to the band either on the official website or facebook, twitter, Myspace etc, and as long as the album went in straight at number 1, "which it did" then the tickets would be distributed to the fans with most inventive ideas. This is a fantastic way of getting publicity for the cost of playing just one gig.

Chart positioning diagram

The first diagram shows the positioning of the album in the first 4 weeks and how it maintained first and second places in the UK album charts respectively moving in and out of the top two spots.

Also the release of "For the first time" the first single release from the album (Science and Faith) this shows how the single came in at number 5 in the first week gained a place in two weeks following, then slowly fell in the charts but still in a very respectable position only just outside the top 10.

The release of the new album beat competition from other well established artists such as: Linkin Park, Phil colins and  Robert Plant, to reach the top spot in the first week of release 18th sep 2010 which has stayed in the top two positions moving back and forth for four weeks now.
Leading up to the date of the release there was lots of primetime airplay on television seeing this advert up to 3 times a night and promoting the bands 11 day UK tour starting 14th march 2011.

Website biography. There is a large biography about the band on the official website, it talks about the success the band had with the last album ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’. Their 2008 debut album that nearly sold 2 million copies worldwide. Also the website gives information about the stadium shows they have performed at with music heroes U2, Take That and Paul McCartney, which gave them opportunities to play in front of a wide age and gender range. They also played a triumphant homecoming set at Ireland’s Oxegen festival before 78,000 fans and won Best Live Performance at the 2010 Meteor Awards. They also talk about the struggles back in their hometown in Ireland of friends and just generally the common people not being able to support their families and struggling to find real jobs, in which they go on to say inspires them to write music about the situation, which ultimately goes on to relate to millions of people worldwide? Also talk about musical genres that have influenced the band such as pop, rock, hip hop and soul which is also a clever way to reach out to a wide range of people. I don’t think they target a specific audience the way they are promoted through touring etc, I think they try to hit such a wide range of people that it is difficult to pin point one Specific target audience.
What music users say about the album (play.com)
This is even better than their last album, great snappy songs (all of them) Fast punchy drum beats, fantastic vocals & excellent sound quality. The chorus to a pop song can be a wonderful thing. No matter how unsettling or scratchy the verse, no matter how atonal and challenging the bridge, everything comes right in the joyous rush of a decent chorus. The chorus is where storm-clouds are parted, waves calm, and sunshine lights up the darkest corners of the human soul as abruptly as fluorescent strip-lights in a scary cellar.

The Script have just such a chorus, and they know it: so much so that it has been crammed, with minor trims and fiddles, into almost every song on their second album. It’s their secret weapon, a chugging, stately thing which is designed to be equally at home in a stadium sing-along or as the soundtrack to an emotional montage in a TV drama.

What they do is set up a four (or sometimes three) chord trick, where the piano and bass play an urgent four-beats-to-the-bar and Danny O'Donoghue urgently crams a ton of words into a short melodic fragment, which he repeats a lot. He gets to rant and hoot, and they get to strike a few epic rock poses. Everyone’s a winner.

You can tell he loves his hip hop as much as his Keane and U2 – although let’s not get carried away, it’s Keane that win, by a mile – and his sandpaper croon carries a lot of emotional force, particularly on lovelorn snuggles like For the First Time and Nothing.
The downside of relying on this one good idea quite so much – apart from the rising suspicion that you’re stuck in a musical mirror-maze – is that songs which are not blessed with The Chorus seem to be half-finished. Walk Away, for example, is a moodier beast than everything else on offer, being closer to Eminem’s self-piteous darkness than Coldplay’s sunny optimism. But after a heap of consecutive Big Chorus songs, it’s hard to escape the feeling that something has been mislaid. Luckily, it’s not a problem anyone has to put up with for very long.(BBC review review 06-09-2010)

This Dublin trio's Sting-soundalike leader, Danny O'Donoghue, says the follow-up to their 2m-selling debut was inspired by "the journey from a feeling of devastation in the pit of my stomach", which might prime you for Leonard Cohen-ish weltschmerz, rather than manicured Celt-rock. O'Donoghue's sincerity as a writer is plain – the single For the First Time reveals his guilt at being successful while friends are suffering from the collapse of the Celtic Tiger – but the production is such a high-shine, epic affair that it all sounds incredibly pedestrian. Mid-tempo guitar rock prevails; so does O'Donoghue's way of raspily soaring through choruses as if his voice has broken free from its moorings. The best moment is easily If You Ever Come Back – not for the startling burst of rapping midway through, but for one sweet line: "If you ever come back, there'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on." The distribution of this album to the general public can relate to many millions of people not only in the UK but worldwide too, due to the recession that has been crippling the world’s economy for the last few years causing people to lose jobs, houses and stability in general. The first single release is about a couple who are unemployed and they find love with each other, the message is that even in the darkest times having no money, work etc, that sharing your love with someone can give you strength to go on in life and make the best of any situation. What a great message to send out to people even if many people disregard this message, the people it does reach out to even if it’s a handful of people who gain faith and actually think “yeh life isn’t too bad after all” then it’s all worthwhile in my eyes.
